“Hype” Still Gets Me
I wish I did not respond to HYPE, but somehow I do. I think we all react to the outrageous or fear-provoking headlines.
After all, who wouldn't want to:
- "become a manifesting machine," or
- avoid "the 3 things you must NEVER do," or
- learn "7 critical things I MUST ask myself?"
So I go ahead and click to see what comes next. And it's almost always something I have to buy to find the secret solution. And if I buy it, I nearly always realize that it wasn't a secret after all. Darn. Fooled again.
Are you able to avoid acting on hype altogether? Do you have any ways to share that help you avoid the disappointment that follows hype?
I am taking a pledge against hype. I want my readers to learn to trust that what I say is genuine, not an attempt to make something seem larger or better than it is. Of course I will pay a price for this. I won't be able to trigger a fear reaction or get someone to click-through to find the secret. I will have to hope people learn, over time, that what I say is reliable, useful, and I hope, helpful. Probably not life-changing, however.

Great idea, Ed. I am going to take 5 minutes today to “unsubscribe” to all those hype emails.
Hayley,
If you unsubscribe to all those hype emails, will you miss the key to the meaning of life?
Actually, I think you already have it.
